Why do we feel alone when we are surrounded by friends, family and co-workers?

Loneliness hurts; isolation is a paralyzing thought.

Even Jesus spoke to feeling lonely Himself when, before going to the cross, He told His disciples that they would scatter and leave Him alone. Even so, He claimed, that He was not alone because God the Father was with Him. Jesus was laying the groundwork to defeat loneliness even as He was going through those feelings on His way to the cross. Even knowing what was in front of Him, He took the time to teach us how to deal with loneliness. The key to loneliness is not filling our time so we don’t have to think about it. The key to battling loneliness is realizing - no matter what life throws at you - you are not alone! After telling the disciples that they would scatter and abandon Him, knowing the loneliness THEY would feel, He encouraged them by saying, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

The key to battling loneliness is taking our feelings and confiding them in Him because, as He said, He has overcome the world and anything it throws at us. And, the Bible says in multiple places, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.”

Runners focus on the horizon not the ground beneath them, not where they stand, but where they are going. Give your loneliness to the Lord. Go to Him in prayer and keep at it. Focus on where you going, not where you are at. He is our Horizon.
